Instagram username rules explained

Handle length, the period trick, 14-day holds, and how availability really works.

Your Instagram username (the handle in your profile URL, instagram.com/yourname) is how people tag and find you. Instagram's rules are short, but a couple of details catch everyone.

The official shape of a handle

1 to 30 characters. Nothing longer gets through.
Letters, numbers, underscores and periods. No spaces or other symbols.
Everything becomes lowercase. Instagram treats capitals as lowercase, so Cristiano and cristiano are the same handle.
No leading or trailing period, and no two periods in a row. .name, name. and na..me are all rejected.
Handles are unique. If someone holds it, you can't take it while they do.

The period trick: Instagram is the period platform. If @name is taken, @na.me, @nam.e or @n.ame might be free - and in a bio they look almost identical. Big creators use this constantly.

What makes a good Instagram handle

Match your other platforms. The same handle everywhere means no lost followers.
Keep it short and sayable. Handles get spoken out loud and typed into mentions.
Prefer clean spellings. baking reads better than ba.king when you can get it - save periods for when the clean version is gone.
Numbers are fine. Digits mixed into an Instagram handle are completely normal.

How availability checking actually works

Instagram keeps a public web profile API: asking it about a handle answers 200 with the account's real data (display name, follower count, post count, avatar) when the handle is claimed, and a flat 404 when nothing lives there.

Available means Instagram itself answered 404 - no public profile exists for the name.
One honest limitation: handles held by banned, deactivated or reserved accounts, and handles inside Instagram's 14-day rename hold, also answer 404. Instagram still rejects them at signup ("This username isn't available"). No public checker can detect these - always double-check a name on Instagram itself before celebrating.
Unverified means Instagram didn't answer cleanly (it limits anonymous checks per network address), so the name is never reported as available on a fluke.

Using the checker well

Single check for one handle you care about.
Bulk check pastes a whole list at once, with no limit, in Normal or Fast pace. Instagram only allows a small number of anonymous checks per cool-down window, so bulk runs pause and cool down automatically when throttled - that's Instagram's limit, not a bug.
